Meriacid
Cross resistance of animal and human pathogens to antibiotics and the ban on antibiotic growth promoters in the EU demonstrate the need for safer alternatives to growth promoters for livestock rearing. With the current ban on the use of prophylactic antibiotics in animal feed to control disease and promoted growth, there is a need for safer alternatives to control the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria int he gut which can impair feed utilisation and manifest itself as enteric diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella spp.
Why use Meriacid?
Meriacid is a feed additive form of Calcium Formate, an organic acid salt for use in pig and poultry diets. It acts as a preservative in the feed and also has an acidifying effect in the gastrointestinal tract, promoting good gut health.
The efficency of pig and poultry digestion is dependant on the indigenous microorganism population of the gastrointestinal tract.
The concept behind the addition of organic acids to animal feeds is to overcome the potential shortfalls in the natural acidification of the gut, thus promoting digestion and preventing scouring. Because most harmful bacteria thrive in a near neutral environment, while beneficial bacteria prefer an acidic environment, acidification allows the intestinal microflora to proliferate in a positive and natural way.
Meriacid's carrier matrix passes through the gastric barrier and gradually releases the active ingredient, efficently enabling the slow release phenomenon.
The benefits of Meriacid:
Helps to preserve feed
Contributes towards the supply of calcium in feed
Improves both feed digestibility and feed conversion
Reduces the number of pathogenic bacteria inside the intestinal lumen
Increases numbers of beneficial microflora that produces organic acids as an energy source
Maintains an optimal pH level and has antibacterial activity towards all Salmonella strains and other pathogenic bacteria
Assists in the weaning process by maintaining a low stomach pH as normally acheived with gastric secretion of hydrochloric acid
Increases villi length and prevents thickening of intestinal mucosae due to a reduction of the pathogenic bacteria count in the intestinal lumen.
Provides an easily digestible source of dietary energy.
