Meriden Smartflor 4%
Meriden Smartflor 4% offers an effective yet economical solution for bacteria-related Swine Respiratory Diseases (SRD) and severe diarrhoea caused by E. coli and Salmonella spp. in pig herds.
What is Meriden Smartflor 4%?
A fast-acting, synthetic feed-grade antibiotic containing florfenicol 40 mg/g that enables mass-medication for control of respiratory diseases associated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Haemophilus spp., Streptococcus suis, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

It has broad spectrum activities that are primarily bacteriostatic and its effect is on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as mycoplasma.
How does Meriden Smartflor 4% work?
Meriden Smartflor 4% binds to the ribosomes of the susceptible bacteria, preventing bacterial protein formation. It does this by inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity, which is necessary for transferring amino acids to peptide chains for bacterial protein formation. Hence, bacteria are unable to synthesise protein.
Despite being a fluorinated derivative of chloramphenicol, it does not carry the risk of inducing human aplastic anaemia that is associated with the use of chloramphenicol, yet it has activity against some chloramphenicol-resistant strains of bacteria. This is because of the structural presence of a p-methyl sulfonyl group instead of the p-nitro group and the presence of a fluorine atom instead of the hydroxyl group in the terminal primary alcohol function of chloramphenicol.
Why use Meriden Smartflor 4%?
Fast acting
Controls severe diarrhoea caused by E. coli and Salmonella spp.
Increases average daily weight gain
Increases survivability
Highly palatable
Can be incorporated into pelleted feeds
Trial
Clinical and pathological parameters of weaning pigs experimentally inoculated with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae are reported in the following trial:
Efficacy of Florfenicol Premix in Weaning Pigs Experimentally Infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae
Palacios-Arriaga JM, Gutierrez-Pabello JA, Chavez-Gris G, Hernandez-Castro R
This study demonstrated that medication with feed containing 40 ppm of florfenicol efficiently blocked the development of signs and lesions of pleuropneumonia caused by A. pleuropneumoniae and doubled the average daily body weight gain.
